“Turning up the Heat on Pests” a talk and “Dust” an exhibition 16 February 2019
WOODFORD ACADEMY, 90-92 Great Western Highway, Woodford
In February 2019 the Woodford Academy became the first property in Australia to undergo a ‘non toxic’ pest control treatment, as part of the National Trust (NSW)’s ongoing commitment to the conservation of our state’s built heritage. The innovative treatment involves progressively heating the interiors of the Blue Mountains oldest building to 56ºC. The treatment targets pests such as borers and silverfish, both of which are notoriously damaging to historic buildings and extremely difficult to eradicate. Join National Trust Collections Manager Rebecca Pinchin and Alex Roach from ‘’Modified Atmospheres’ at 1pm on Saturday 16 February 2019, to discover more about the fascinating conservation work being undertaken at the Woodford Academy, the challenges of heritage management, the Woodford Academy’s catalogue of historic ‘pests’ and this innovative conservation treatment.
We are also pleased to present for the last time ‘Dust : An exhibition about insects, collections and heritage buildings’ for our open day on Saturday 16 February. ‘Dust’ brings together artists and museum professionals to explore the processes of collection care underway at the Blue Mountains oldest colonial buildings, the Woodford Academy. ‘Dust’ engages with the idea of collection care while at the same time examining the lives and activities of insects. Just like we do, insects seek the right conditions to thrive and grow; that they may nest in our precious memory-objects and spaces is of no consequence to them. Dust highlights the materiality of insect bodies, museum objects and heritage environments and gives expression to the productive and destructive forces inherent to human-insect relationships.
