Artist in Residence – Sue Murray 20 June 2026

Saturday, 20 June: Artist In Residence – Sue Murray at Woodford Academy, 90-92 Great Western Highway, Woodford.
Talk at 1 pm
Sue Murray is an artist working across drawing and photographic image-making, exploring perception and the optical effects of light as it transforms observed objects and the natural world. Recently, she has been working with traditional elements of drawing and photography, using a camera obscura to create images that are later transcribed through burnished graphite into drawings that evoke daguerreotypes, a popular photographic process of the 1850s.
In the orchard garden of Woodford Academy, a pear tree planted in the 1850s stands as a quiet witness to the lives once lived at the roadside inn.
This residency offers Sue the opportunity to uncover visual fragments, both actual and imagined, in the creation of a new body of work exploring life at the roadside inn during the mid-nineteenth century. She is particularly curious about how it was to live there as a woman in the 1850s.
